During the real estate crash of 2008, Wexler Real Estate Founder James Wexler and his wife found a vacant home that someone had abandoned in the middle of the night. Inside, a dog was whimpering and looking for its owner. It, too, had been left behind.
The Wexlers took the dog to a shelter and found many other people had given up their animals as well after downsizing to apartments or moving in with family during the economic downturn. This left shelters overcrowded and many dogs’ lives on the line.
James and his wife wanted to be part of the solution. They began fostering dogs, many of them beagles, until the rescues could find a permanent foster family or a forever home. Since then, they have fostered over 100 dogs and built a strong relationship with the Arizona Beagle Rescue.
James has been an incredibly generous business partner, mentor and friend for Homes for Good Founder Tim McBride. As a small token of appreciation, Homes for Good is proud to sponsor Arizona Beagle Rescue (AZBR) as our Non-Profit of the Quarter for October – December 2019.
Since 2002, AZBR has saved thousands of homeless beagles through rescue efforts, adoption and education. This 100% volunteer-run non-profit works in cooperation with animal shelters, humane agencies, and other rescues throughout the United States to reduce the euthanasia of adoptable beagles and to promote lifelong relationships between beagles and their companions. Their work includes:
- Finding forever homes for homeless beagles that may otherwise be euthanized
- Providing beagles and their companions the opportunity to interact with other beagles and beagle fans
- Helping guardians better understand their dog’s temperament and traits
- Guiding people who have found a stray beagle on the appropriate legal steps to take
- Assisting those who need to find their beagle a new home, when they can no longer keep their beagle
- Educating the public on the importance of spay and neuter
When looking to add a dog to your family, there are so many options: rescues, shelters, breeders, neighbors, pet shops, and more. Rescues like AZBR and shelters are by far the best options. Here’s why.
1. You’re saving a life.
There are thousands of dogs, including beagles, that are sitting and waiting to be adopted. Many at shelters are facing euthanasia because of crowding and limited resources. Why pay a breeder when you can give a healthy, lovable dog a chance at a long, happy life?
2. Spay or neuter + vaccinations included.
Many rescues, including AZBR, make sure dogs are spayed or neutered and that vaccinations are up to date before placing them for adoption. AZBR also addresses medical needs, makes adopting families aware of any known health issues, and connects you with the veterinarian who has been providing treatment.
3. Fostering promotes socialization.
AZBR volunteers foster rescued beagles in their own homes until they find their forever family. That means they get to know the dogs before adoption and can alert families to any quirks or habits, and provide strategies for dealing with potential problems.
4. Support after adoption.
Need recommendations for a vet? Going on vacation and need a pet sitter? Has your dog developed an unusual behavior, and you want to know if it’s cause for concern? AZBR is here for you! Many foster families are happy to watch their former foster dogs, or AZBR can recommend a trusted sitter or boarding facility. They can also offer tips and training for any behavior challenges or other normal issues dog parents may encounter after adoption. Plus, if anything happens and you can no longer care for your rescued dog, many organizations including AZBR will take the dog back at no extra charge.
5. Part of a family.
Though your rescue dog will live with you, he or she will always be part of a larger family. AZBR likes to keep in touch with their adoptive families and watch their beagles live the happy life they deserve.
How You Can Support AZBR and Save Beagles’ Lives
AZBR operates solely on donations and has no shelter of its own. Instead, a statewide network of volunteers open their homes and hearts to provide foster care for rescued dogs.
This quarter, the Homes for Good community is coming together to raise $1,500 to help AZBR save at least 15 beagles from being euthanized and find them qualified, loving forever homes. Donations will go toward spay or neuter services, vaccinations, and microchipping for dogs prior to adoption. (Austin Bates and V.I.P. Mortgage will be matching all donations as our 2019 Homes for Good Title Sponsor!)
